Welcome to the “Away from Here” weekend series, where All Things Madison features exciting businesses, events, and opportunities outside of Madison. This weekend we’re heading just a few miles east to Huntsville and sharing about a volleyball option that may just be the solution you’ve been hoping would pop up for you or your child. Check it out!
The Governors Drive area in Huntsville is exploding in popularity due to the massive facelift the area has been experiencing in the last few years, but popular venues such as Stovehouse and Campus 805 aren’t the only businesses in that area to take an old, unoccupied building and transform it into something really needed.
United Volleyball, which is located just a mile south of the aforementioned businesses, also joins the list as a business that is here to stay in the Huntsville area. This indoor (and future beach) volleyball facility is immaculately designed for max instruction in the most conducive of settings. It is impressibly spacious and aesthetically pleasing for a sports facility.
United Volleyball in Huntsville, Alabama
United Volleyball is taking youth athletics and volleyball in general to the next level here in north Alabama, and co-director Heather Sodade couldn’t be more excited about it.
“We combined three separate local volleyball entities into one back in 2018 for the better of the athletes. Everything we do from the start has always been for our athletes because we all really want them to have the same opportunities that many of us did when we fell in love with the game.”
Sodade, who played volleyball collegiately, continues to share that she helps train her athletes in a way that will give them a chance to play in college one day too if they dream of doing so.
“At United, we want to provide everything to our athletes that will give them the highest-level training in a setting that they love being a part of.”
Though United Volleyball offers programs and club options of all kinds for athletes that desire to play on a highly competitive level, Sodade shares that United also offers many options for players of all ages and levels, from children as young as six all the way up to adults that simply desire to learn how to play the game.
United Volleyball offers both indoor volleyball (at their stunning new location which just opened at the end of 2021) as well as beach volleyball. Beach Volleyball courts are currently under construction though are expected to be completed in the next few weeks. They’ll be located on the same property as the indoor facility.
When the indoor facility was completed last year, the owners decided to leave the exposed brick as a nod to the character and charm of the building. Impressions of former staircases can be seen on the walls. (So neat.)

The indoor facility is covered with padded walls for safety purposes and has three full-sized courts. United can be found full of players nearly all day long seven days a week. Adults are often found at the gym playing during lunch, while other athletes begin training daily at 4 p.m.
When asked what makes United Volleyball unique from other volleyball training options, Sodade says that they “offer the best value with the best coaching around.”
“We want to let parents see that every single dime they spend with United is being used to develop their athlete.”
Sodade also shared that United strives to keep costs as low as possible to make volleyball an option for as many people as possible.
“We aren’t in this to make money,” she says. “We are in this to help people fall in love with the game.”
She continued to share that United’s focus has “never been financial, and we hope that people see that.”
United Volleyball has all kinds of options for players of all levels who are ready to get started and enroll in their program.
Not only do they offer club team opportunities, but they also offer “Sprouts” programs for beginner-level elementary students. These beginner programs focus heavily on the basics of the game and hand-eye coordination. They do not play against other teams.
United also offers adult lessons and play time for both indoor and beach volleyball. Sodade says these options are fantastic for beginners who are simply seeking to learn to play the game as a hobby as well as those athletes who grew up playing the game and are looking for an outlet to continue doing so.
Finally, Sodade says that United Volleyball has a master coach who is constantly in the building and training athletes.
“If you’re homeschooled, great! If you’re playing volleyball at school already, great! If you’re a beginner and simply want to learn the game, great! We have something for everyone at United.”
United Volleyball will soon launch its summertime schedule and encourages interested families and players to follow along on their social media channels and website to keep up with announcements and opportunities as they quickly roll out.
