The Stem and Stein, a County Line Road staple and long-time community favorite, originally opened in 2007 by an out-of-state couple who saw that Madison had a missing market for something just like it. Fast forward 13 years and The Stem and Stein (now under different owners who took over several years ago) is still happily serving customers from across the region who are looking for a quaint place to pop in and enjoy some downtime.
What to Expect from The Stem and Stein in Madison, Alabama
If you’ve never been inside The Stem and Stein, here’s what you can expect. The Stem and Stein offers customers several options. First, they offer customers a dine-in opportunity, complete with lengthy wine and beer menus as well as appetizer selections and a short dinner menu (think paninis, pizzas, and salads!)
“We don’t use fryers, so you won’t find burgers and fries on our menu,” says co-owner Ali King. “Most of our menu items are somewhat unique and considered ‘small plate’ options that could be sharable appetizers or enjoyed individually as meals.”

In addition to being a full-service restaurant, The Stem and Stein is also a retail store.
“Something that makes us unique is that a customer can come in to enjoy a glass of wine and then purchase an unopened bottle of the same wine to take home,” explains King.
“A lot of people think we are either a retail shop or a restaurant, but we pride ourselves in being both!”
King says that keg orders have become increasingly popular and that they are happy to meet the growing demand.
“People special order kegs all the time. We can pretty much fulfill any order as long as we have some advance notice.”

The Stem and Stein’s inside dining area is quaint and comfortable, featuring bistro tables, a bar, and long tables for bigger groups. They also have an outdoor patio space that’s available for rent for special events.
King, who co-owns the restaurants and retail store with her husband Justin and sister Jessica Petty says that they’ve all been with the company since nearly the beginning of its inception and are excited to continue serving our community as it grows.
