Scout Pest Control owner Jared Toone says that it’s just about time for a tremendous uptick in calls from frantic home and business owners who have discovered evidence of rodents making themselves cozy in places they aren’t welcomed.
Toone explains that fall and winter months are generally when rodents will sneakily make themselves comfortable in your home if preventative measures aren’t put in place first.
“They love your home for the same reasons you do. Rodents are searching for warmth, shelter, and food, and they can dislocate their bones in a way that they can squeeze through crevices you didn’t think were possible to get through.”
He explains that mice are able to get through an opening as small as a dime, and rats can wiggle through an opening as small as a quarter.
Toone says that no homes are off limits to rodents, who will chew their way through anything they can find. Because their teeth are always growing, they are constantly seeking items to chew on and can even make their way through half-inch lead pipes quickly if not discovered in time. Toone shares that rodents are even capable are whittling away at brick over time.
He also shares that rodents do not discriminate and will work their way into brick homes, new homes (that are “well-built”), and other structures that some assume wouldn’t attract such wildlife.
“Once you have rodents, the smell is hard to get rid of. They’ll dig burrows, leave feces, and damage areas you wouldn’t suspect they would.”
Toone says that it is crucial that homeowners and business owners have a preventative approach to rodents rather than a reactive approach, especially in a community where new construction, residential, and commercial properties are continuing to break ground on every corner.
“As the population grows, the rodents begin to spread out. They begin looking for new homes and over time inch their way closer and closer to your property.”
When asked what the best thing one can do to get rid of rodents once they’ve made their presence known, Toone says that there is no single magic formula.
“We have various types of traps depending on the type of rodent, the severity of the problem, and the likelihood that the traps may be disturbed. ”
Though Scout Pest Control is well versed in coming on-site to help get rid of rodents that are hanging around, Toone says this locally-owned company excels in preventative care of your property.
“Before those rodents move into your home, they’ll move into your yard first. For this reason, we install rodent bait systems around the home, which are little black boxes that humans can’t get into.”
He explains that these boxes have very small holes for the rodents to enter, which will get rid of them before they ever become established on the property.
Scout Pest Control visits each of their customers once per quarter to perform their standard pest control service and offers rodent bait stations around one’s property at a minimal $8/per month additional fee. These bait stations are generally placed out of sight behind bushes or air conditioning units and are monitored by Scout Pest Control.
Toone further explains that property owners will keep the rodent bait boxes for as long as they have the service and that Scout will put out as many boxes as needed to ensure that rodents never make their way to your home.
Though the preventative approach is always preferred, Toone says that Scout Pest Control can absolutely help property owners who have discovered these unwanted rodents. He shares that Scout does not use sticky traps or snap traps outside, but that they will use a variety of traps safely inside.
Scout Pest Control is happy to come on-site to help eliminate rodents for non-customers, simply charging a one-time service fee.
In addition to the rodent bait boxes that Scout Pest Control uses to prevent rodents from making their way inside your property, they also offer an “exclusion” service, which is also preventative in nature. This exclusion service seals off areas of your property and “rodent-proofs” them.
In general, Toone is proud that Scout Pest Control is able to customize your rodent control via bait stations, exclusion options, or even their line of organic, “green” rodent-eliminating options.
Toone shares one overall tip for preventing a rodent problem at your home or business: eliminate access to food, such as easily-accessible bird feeders or grass seed. He also shares to be aware of unfamiliar scratching noises like fingernails on sheetrock.
