Welcome to week #3 of the “Moving to Madison Mondays” series, where we break down topics that often make newcomers (as well as not-so-newcomers) scratch their heads for answers.

Today’s content will answer all things related to “Where do I get my driver’s license in Madison, Alabama?” as well as “Where do I renew my driver’s license in Madison?”

One would think this question would be answered by a quick Google search, but it’s surprisingly not that easy to find a direct answer, especially for those who are unfamiliar with the area.

You may want to poke around on the internet a bit more to find answers to really specific questions that pertain to your individual situation, but here are some clarifications, in a nutshell, to get you started.

Getting a driver's license in Madison, Alabama 1.) If you are moving from out of state, you will need to travel outside of Madison city limits to obtain an Alabama driver's license because Madison's DMV does not offer the option to apply for a new in-state license (only renewals).

1.) If you are moving from out of state, you will need to travel outside of Madison city limits to obtain an Alabama driver’s license because Madison’s DMV does not offer the option to apply for a new in-state license (only renewals).

2.) Renewals and change of address can be done at the DMV in Madison.

3.) Driver’s license renewals can be done online as long as no information needs to be changed, added, or taken away.

4.) Most people in Madison, Alabama travel to either Huntsville, Athens, or Decatur (addresses listed below) to obtain their new Alabama driver’s license.

5.) If you wish to add a STAR ID to your license, you must visit a driver’s license office in-person to do this.

6.) All Alabama drivers have a 60-day grace period following the expiration of their license to renew it.

7.) If you move from one in-state address to another, you are required to update your license within 30 days.

8.) New residents must apply for an in-state driver’s license within 30 days of moving. You will be required to take a vision exam and relinquish your former ID.

9.) Be prepared to bring several forms of proof of residency (i.e. utility bill, social security card, current driver’s license, etc.) Absolutely double-check this online or make a call about exactly what forms are needed before you show up in-person.

10.) I think we all know this, but showing up way, way, way before the office opens seems to be the way to go. I’ve never had a DMV experience that was lickety-split (Have you?) We all know this isn’t a super fun process, so bring a charged cell phone or some reading material and plan to spend some time getting this done. If you’re one of the lucky ones that gets in and gets out quickly, bravo. Always better to set expectations way low when it comes to a DMV visit. And seriously, don’t show up without doing your research about what forms to bring. So important.
