On a list of my favorite things to do in the summertime, eating dinner outside as a family on our patio table is near the top. Soaking up the warm rays of the sun while enjoying a meal straight from the grill is what my favorite summertime memories are made of.
This blissful summer bubble usually doesn’t last long though before a couple of my family members are inevitably slapping their arms and legs to ward off mosquitos before finally having enough of the irritating bites and picking up their plates to move inside. *sigh*
We’re crossing our fingers though that the mosquito service from Scout Pest Control will help significantly with their presence in our yard so that we can enjoy much more time outside with way less squashing of these warm-weather pests.
We’ve been loyal customers of Scout Pest Control for nearly a year and have been extremely satisfied not only with the pest control service they provide at our home but also with their reliable customer service and incredible-friendly and knowledgeable technicians. My parents have been extremely happy customers with Scout Pest Control for years, so hiring this local company to tackle this area of home maintenance was a no-brainer.
Though mosquito bites have been a significant issue for a couple of my family members in particular each summer, I had always just thrown extra bug spray at them and assumed there was nothing else we could do. I knew the city of Madison has an occasional spraying service that they do through the community, but Scout Pest Control owner Jared Toone says that what the city is spraying is only tackling a small part of the mosquito population.
“The city is targeting a different type of mosquito,” shares Toone, who continues to explain that the mosquitos they’re spraying for are the ones that can fly long distances from the Tennessee River or marsh areas.
“What we’re targeting are the backyard breeders, which carry a lot of diseases such as parasites that cause heartworm.”
Toone explains that some of the stronger-flying mosquitos are the ones that typically carry bigger diseases such as malaria, which is why the city is spraying for these.
“The backyard breeders though are hanging out under and around bushes, in your pots, the hollows of your trees, your gutters, and other little pockets of water that they love.”
Scout Pest Control has a mosquito service that effectively treats these mosquitos right away, eliminating nearly 70% of your yard’s mosquitos instantly and the other 30% within 1-4 hours.
Toone says that he and his team of technicians treat yards for mosquitos from March through October and come out to your property every three weeks to apply another treatment.
“We will thoroughly inspect your yard while looking for those nesting and breeding areas,” he explains.
Scout Pest Control will then use its state-of-the-art equipment and specific granules to target mosquitos only. These granules release a hormone that effectively stop the mosquito from progressing in its lifestyle and becoming an adult.
“Only female mosquitos will suck blood when they are ready to lay eggs, and they like to hang out on plants because their primary food source is plant sugars.”
Toone continues to explain that his team will use a special blower to ensure that even the undersides of bushes are completely coated, which effectively eliminates all mosquitos in one’s yard the same day as the service.
“These backyard-breeding mosquitos are typically poor flyers, so instead of flying straight to a host, they’ll fly to a bush first where they’ll take a break and snack on some plant sugars,” he explains. “When they take a break on the bush, they’ll be exposed to this product.”
Scout Pest Control also offers a “green” version of their mosquito service as well (in addition to their green pest control service).
Toone shares that because nearly everyone has at least one bush in his or her yard, this is a service that is a need for everyone. This service also prevents fleas and ticks in one’s yard, though this shouldn’t replace a dog’s routine flea and tick medication.

{Editor’s note: After my interview with Toone about mosquitos, I emailed Scout Pest Control several days later to inquire about the service. My family is now happily set up with mosquito treatments this summer, and I am incredibly optimistic that our quality of life outdoors will be improved this summer thanks to fewer mosquito bites.}
