Maura was born in Portsmouth, Virginia and travelled around the world with her parents as the daughter of a Naval Officer. Her parents retired to the Gulf Breeze, near Pensacola and she completed high school there. Maura then graduated from Pensacola Junior College (now Pensacola State College) and received her B.S. Degree in Marketing from The University of West Florida. Upon graduation, Maura worked as a Sales Representative for several companies including Kraft Foods, Kimberly Clark and Nabisco. She met her husband, Ron playing church volleyball and they were married in 1990. Their son, Zach was born in 1994 and daughter, Sarah arrived in 1997. In 1998, Ron’s position as a Human Resources Specialist was transferred from Pensacola NAS to Redstone Arsenal.

Zach and Sarah both attended West Madison Elementary, Liberty Middle and graduated from Bob Jones High School. Both children played soccer for Bob Jones and Zach went on to play for four years at Berry College. He graduated from Berry College in 2016 with a B.A. Degree in Secondary Education and Political Science. Zach received a Fulbright Scholarship and taught English in Krompachny, Slovakia for the 2016-2017 school year where he also played semiprofessional soccer. Zach and his high school sweetheart, the former Megan Benefield, married in May, 2020 and they welcomed their first child, a son, Hayes in April, 2025. They currently live in Atlanta where he teaches Social Studies at The Westminster Schools and is their Goalkeeper Coach and Megan is a Nurse Practitioner. Sarah graduated from Marion Military Institute in 2017. She is a full time Firefighter in North Charleston, South Carolina and Staff Sergeant in the United States Air Force Reserves serving as a Flight Medic and is stationed at Joint AFB Charleston, South Carolina.

Maura has been a community volunteer in many areas. She was the first female baseball coach at Palmer Park. She has also coached AYSO Soccer, Upward Basketball and softball at WESTCO. She has also been a PTA Officer at her children’s three schools, substitute school teacher and most exciting, served as crossing guard at Bob Jones High School for several years. Maura was also the Chair of the Asbury Community Thrift Store, which since its inception, has given over $1,000,000 back into the Madison Missions Community.

In 2016, she was elected to the Madison City Council representing District 1. She was reelected with over 65% of the vote in 2020. Maura faced no challenger in the 2025 Municipal Election so she will continue her service until November, 2029. Maura works full time in her position on the Madison City Council. Her main objectives are communication and service to her District. In her spare time, Maura enjoys playing golf with Ron, reading, jigsaw puzzles and participating yearly in the 100 Mile Swim Challenge. She and Ron are also involved with several animal rescue groups providing safe harbor for kittens and cats. Maura, maybe more so than Ron. 😂

Maura does not have an opponent this term, and believes that is a reflection of the work that we have done over the last nine years.

Some of the things that she is most proud of are the Wall Triana multi-use path that goes from Gillespie Road down to Browns Ferry Road. This was specifically a goal of hers due to folks living nearby who were walking their children to West Madison Elementary School and having to walk either in the ditch or on the side of the road. Today, it is a joy to see parents walking their children to Midtown Elementary School.

She is also very proud of the roundabout that has been installed been at Balch and Gillespie. There is a roundabout under construction at Browns Ferry and Burgreen Road, and two more coming at Balch and Gooch and Balch and Browns Ferry. She believes that roundabouts are less expensive in the long run, are more efficient, and tremendously relieve traffic congestion.

For this next term, she is most excited about two projects: the new Madison Animal Services Shelter on Celtic Ave. and the new Mill Creek Greenway that will extend from Gillespie Road to the north, south to Browns Ferry Road, west to Balch Road, and east to Wall Triana. Work has started on this greenway just two weeks ago.

Even though she doesn’t have an opponent, she still plans to walk her District in the next two months—seeing old friends and making new ones. If you have voted in either municipal election in 2016 or 2020, or in either of the two special elections we have had, she looks forward to seeing you!
