Madison Mayoral Race: Steve Smith’s Plan to Tackle Traffic, Schools, and Quality of Life

Steve Smith has called Madison home for over three decades, raising his family here and even running a local small business. He’s spent 25+ years in city service, from two terms on the City Council to his current role as City Administrator. Outside of work, you’ll find him active in church, volunteering, and cheering on his grandkids. Now, he’s hoping to bring that long history with Madison to the mayor’s office.

Meet Steve Smith: A Proven Leader with a Bold Vision for Madison

For over 25 years, I’ve had the honor of serving the city I love—Madison, Alabama. As your current City Administrator and a former two-term City Councilman, I’ve seen firsthand the heart, spirit, and resilience that define our community. Madison isn’t just where I live, it’s where I’ve built my life, raised my family, run a small business, and dedicated my career to public service.

Now, I’m running for Mayor of Madison to continue that service and lead our city into its next chapter with steady, experienced leadership and a clear focus on the issues that matter most to you.

Why I’m Running for Mayor

This city has given me everything—friendships, opportunities, and a place to call home for over 31 years. I’ve worked alongside Mayor Paul Finley and our outstanding city team to move Madison forward, but there’s still more to do. Our city is growing rapidly, and while that’s exciting, it brings new challenges that require leadership with proven experience and a deep understanding of how Madison works.

I’m running for Mayor because I believe in Madison’s future—and I know how to help us get there. I’ve spent my career listening, learning, and leading. Now I’m ready to lead Madison into a new era—focused, accountable, and always putting people first.

What I Hope to Accomplish

Madison is at a crossroads. Growth is coming fast, and we need to be ready. My priorities are clear and grounded in the daily concerns of residents—from traffic congestion to public safety to education and quality of life.

1. Alleviating Traffic Congestion

No issue gets people talking in Madison quite like traffic and I get it. Whether you’re commuting to work, dropping kids at school, or just trying to get across town, traffic congestion affects all of us. We need a transportation strategy that serves today’s Madison and tomorrow’s. I won’t stop until we have roads that work for everyone.

As Mayor, I will:

  • Fight for critical infrastructure funding at the state and federal level
  • Invest in road expansions and improvements
  • Identify and fix major choke points across the city
  • Work with regional partners on long-term traffic planning and smart development

2. Protecting Our Neighborhoods and First Responders

Madison is one of the safest cities in Alabama because of the dedication of our police officers and firefighters. But safety doesn’t maintain itself.

As Mayor, I will:

  • Collaborate closely with our police and fire departments
  • Secure funding for modern equipment and ongoing training
  • Prioritize safety in every community, not just a few

When people feel safe, everything else—schools, businesses, and neighborhoods can thrive.

3. Investing in Madison’s Schools

Our schools are a cornerstone of our community and a major reason families choose Madison.

As Mayor, I will:

  • Continue to champion the ½ cent sales tax that supports school funding
  • Fight to protect that revenue from outside interests or political maneuvering
  • Support infrastructure improvements and staffing needs
  • Ensure long-term success for all our schools including James Clemens High and those beyond 2027

Great schools require leadership and investment. I’ll work closely with Madison City Schools to ensure every child has access to a world-class education.

4. Prioritizing Quality of Life for All Residents

Madison’s growth demands that we also invest in the things that make life enjoyable like our parks, recreation, and community spaces.

As Mayor, I will:

  • Prioritize upgrades to Palmer Park to meet the expectations of our growing community
  • Explore the development of a public pool that supports families, youth sports, and community health
  • Support construction of an indoor pickleball facility and expanded recreational offerings

A thriving city needs more than roads and schools. The city needs places where families gather, neighbors connect, and memories are made.

5. Restoring Accountability and Transparency

Public service is about trust. That trust must be earned—and protected—from outside special interests.

As Mayor, I will:

  • Keep politics out of public service
  • Reject interference from special interest groups
  • Ensure transparent decision-making and open communication with residents
  • Promote responsible budgeting and strategic planning

We’ve seen the cost both financial and civic when outside agendas interfere. A failed election to push a City Manager system, driven by a Huntsville-based group, cost Madison over $20,000. That’s unacceptable. As Mayor, I’ll ensure our city’s future is guided only by you the people of Madison.

What Makes Me Uniquely Qualified

I bring more than experience, I bring understanding, dedication, and deep roots in this community.

  • Leadership Experience: City Administrator, two-term City Councilman, former Finance Chair and Council President
  • Community Ties: 30+ years in Madison, former small business owner, active church and volunteer leader
  • Education: B.S. in Business Administration & Computer Information Systems, Trevecca Nazarene University; Local Government Certification, Auburn University
  • Personal Dedication: Husband, father, and grandfather—this city is my home and my legacy

Let’s Move Madison Forward—Together

This campaign is about service not ambition. It’s about people over politics and doing what’s right, even when it’s hard. I believe in honest leadership, open communication, and decisions rooted in what’s best for Madison.

Let’s tackle traffic. Strengthen our schools. Support our first responders. Invest in our quality of life.

Let’s make Madison the best place to live, work, and raise a family in Alabama.

Steve Smith
Candidate for Mayor of Madison
