Traffic Lights, Sidewalks, and Solutions: Erica White On District 6

Erica is bringing an engineer’s precision, a business owner’s practicality, and a volunteer’s heart to the race for Madison City Council, District 6. A mother of two and longtime community volunteer, she’s spent over a decade solving complex problems as a civilian engineer for the U.S. Army before putting down roots in Madison in 2016. From tackling traffic congestion to supporting smart growth and school infrastructure, Erica’s priorities are shaped by both data and daily life in District 6. Her story blends technical know-how with a commitment to service, and she’s ready to put both to work for her neighbors.

Erica White for Madison City Council, District 6

Service. Integrity. Leadership that Listens.

Tell us about yourself.

My name is Erica White, and I’m running to represent District 6 on the Madison City Council. I’m an electrical engineer, a small business owner, a mother of two young children, and a dedicated community volunteer. For over a decade, I served as a civilian engineer for the U.S. Army, where I gained deep experience in budgeting, problem-solving, and leading cross-functional teams.

These are skills that directly translate to effective local governance.

My journey brought me to Madison in 2016, where my husband and I chose to put down roots and raise our family. Like many others, we were drawn by Madison’s strong schools, safe neighborhoods, and growing opportunities. As a parent, I’m personally invested in the future of Madison City Schools. As a business owner, I understand the challenges and opportunities facing local entrepreneurs. And as a resident of District 6, I experience the same traffic delays and infrastructure needs my neighbors talk about every day.

Beyond my professional work, I’ve always believed in service. I’ve volunteered as a Court Appointed Juvenile Advocate, an adult education tutor, a direct care hospice volunteer, a meal delivery driver, and as an usher at my church. This belief in community, integrity, and stepping up to make a difference is what drives me to seek this office.

Why are you running for office?

I’m running for City Council because I care about Madison and the people who call it home. The decisions we make today will shape Madison for the next generation. With the rapid growth we’re experiencing, we have a responsibility to invest in smart infrastructure, protect our top-ranked schools, and support development that strengthens our economy without sacrificing our quality of life.

I’m running now because I see the challenges and know I can help solve them. With my background in engineering and project management, I bring a data-driven, solutions-focused approach. And with my ties to the community, I bring empathy, perspective, and a willingness to listen.

Our city government should work for the people. That means being accessible, transparent, and accountable. I’m running to be a representative who not only speaks, but also listens, acts, and delivers results.

What do you hope to accomplish if elected? Tangible examples are desired.

If elected, I plan to focus on four key areas: roads and infrastructure, education, thoughtful city growth, and first responder support.

  1. Roads and Infrastructure

One of the most common concerns I hear among Madison citizens is frustration with traffic and outdated roads, especially in District 6. Some areas have seen a lot of growth, but not enough investment in infrastructure. I will:

  • Push for the completion of long-delayed road projects in District 6, including intersection improvements and missing sidewalk connections.
  • Support efforts to improve traffic signal timing and reduce congestion.
  • Prioritize safe pedestrian access with better sidewalks, crosswalks and bike paths near schools, parks, and neighborhoods.

I will work closely with city staff to identify funding opportunities, prioritize projects, and clearly communicate timelines and progress to residents.

  1. Education Support

While the City Council does not run the school system, it plays a critical role in funding major school infrastructure projects. I will:

  • Promote strong financial stewardship so the city can continue to support needed school buildings and expansions.
  • Support smart planning for future growth to help reduce school overcrowding and keep Madison’s schools among the best in the state.
  • Advocate for safer routes to school, particularly through sidewalk expansions and traffic calming measures in residential areas.

  1. Thoughtful City Growth

Growth is inevitable, but how we manage it is a choice. I believe we need development that fits our community, complements existing neighborhoods, and adds value. I support:

  • Attracting commercial development that strengthens our local economy and reduces the tax burden on residents.
  • Encouraging projects that bring jobs and services to underutilized corridors in District 6, while promoting sustainable growth that balances development with long-term environmental and community impact.
  • Protecting green space and investing in parks, trails, and recreational spaces that enhance quality of life.

  1. First Responder Support

Public safety is essential to our community’s well-being. I will advocate for:

  • Competitive pay and benefits for police officers, firefighters, and EMTs, to help attract and retain top talent.
  • The strategic expansion of fire stations and public safety services in areas experiencing rapid growth.
  • Community engagement efforts that build trust between first responders and residents, including neighborhood outreach and public education programs.

What makes you uniquely qualified to serve Madison?

I bring a well-rounded combination of experience, leadership, and service to the role.

As an engineer, I know how to manage complex projects, analyze data, and make informed decisions. These skills are critical when it comes to prioritizing infrastructure, reviewing development proposals, and setting long-term goals for the city. I am also no stranger to working with limited resources and delivering results under pressure.

As a small business owner, I’ve had to navigate city processes, manage budgets, and meet the needs of both customers and employees. I understand how policy decisions at City Hall impact local businesses, and I will be a strong voice for economic growth that is sustainable and fair.

As a volunteer and mother, I’m deeply connected to the everyday lives of Madison residents. I know the importance of having safe neighborhoods, strong schools, responsive city services, and public spaces where families can thrive. I listen, I show up, and I take action—and I will bring that same commitment to the council.

What truly sets me apart is my approach. I believe leadership is about service. If elected, I will be accessible, hold regular community meetings, and maintain open lines of communication. My goal is to be a council member who not only makes good decisions, but also keeps the public informed and involved.

Final Thoughts

I’m running because I believe Madison deserves leadership that is proactive, thoughtful, and committed to getting things done. I bring the skills, dedication, and heart to serve effectively, and to ensure that as Madison grows, it remains a place we’re all proud to call home.

Thank you for taking the time to learn more about me and my campaign. I would be honored to earn your support and your vote.

Let’s build Madison’s future together.

Erica White

Candidate for Madison City Council, District 6
