A Madison resident since 2009, Karen Denzine stands out as the “people’s voice” on City Council, vigorously advocating to ensure citizens’ interests are fully and best represented. She has consistently supported measures that protect our schools, bolster the quality of life for our community, and strengthen our city’s financial viability. Karen has assertively challenged those that don’t.

“Our citizens deserve someone who puts their priorities first.  Full stop.”

Developers and special interests receive prominent airtime and influence in council decisions.  Karen is often the sole council member asking them the tough questions to ensure citizen concerns are addressed. And her vote is the citizens’ gavel.

“I may have only one vote, but it has always been and always will be on behalf of our citizens and city. After all, we serve at the pleasure of the people and are here specifically as their representatives.”

Karen has always been accessible and responsive to her District 6 constituents and all community members, not only in election season but throughout the years.

“How can I represent the citizens if I haven’t talked with them and learned their concerns first hand?  Whether a casual conversation at the store or meeting residents on their doorstep, I am continually listening to the people.  I am always responsive: finding answers to their questions or solutions to their City related problems.  By having professional working relationships with the current city department heads and their staff, I can bring the citizens’ concerns and questions to the attention of those that can best address their issues.”

“I am dedicated to representing Madison citizens. It is my full time job. I don’t have a ‘day job’ to take my focus away from city affairs. This allows me to invest the time doing detailed homework on the issues before council. I don’t take money from special interest groups, so I never have conflicts of interest when voting and can advocate for our citizens without reservation.”

Karen not only has the time to devote purely to city affairs, she has the skills to understand the development and contracts that dominate council attention with the city’s rapid growth. She earned two business degrees from the University of Georgia, with a Master’s degree specializing in international industrial site location. In her professional career, she performed commercial investment analysis and managed the computer, business development, and brokerage liaison departments for NAI Global.  “Through my education and work experience, I understand how the different aspects of business analysis and community development fit together.”

“We, thankfully, have a phenomenal staff, yet ultimately council makes the strategic zoning and funding decisions. To make appropriate informed decisions, we have to know the right questions to ask. I understand the issues. I ask the right questions. I do the hard analysis. I listen to knowledgeable    citizens. And I have the independence and courage to vote based on the objective facts.”

Karen kept the tax payers foremost when pushing back against funding seven executive suites at Toyota Field, which would have added roughly $30 million in additional city debt.  It was a contentious issue with certain council members pressing hard for the exclusive new spaces.

“Wise use of the tax payers money is crucial. We need to prioritize our investment in our existing infrastructure over riskier long term projects. Standing up for the tax payer by pushing back against adding seven additional suites to the Toyota Stadium was important to me on behalf of my constituents.  Citizens continually said they were against the expansion.  I listened.”

“I felt going $30M further in debt at the Stadium put the long term financial stability of the City at risk.  Because if the additional projected revenues were not realized, it could have diminished the money earmarked for city services. The numbers were far from assured and it was not a risk I was willing to support.”

“The Toyota Stadium and Trash Pandas bring a uniquely wonderful quality of life for our community, but the math and benefit to citizens for this project simply didn’t add up.  We have to find an appropriate balance with our limited resources to maintain our city’s financial security.”

The City’s first responsibility is to provide for the safety and welfare of its residents. Assuring our police and firefighters have the proper training and equipment are essential to maintaining a healthy community.  As is prioritizing the improvement of our existing infrastructure.

“Please, do something about the traffic!” is the most common comment from constituents.

“The traffic situation is clearly intolerable. We have brilliant engineers and must better resource them to get ahead of the traffic problem. Decades ago, city leaders designed our infrastructure to limit growth. If we are to continue to grow, we must immediately overcome those design constraints”

Karen believes that, in addition to widening critical roads and improving intersections where possible, there are numerous options that can and must be pursued to improve traffic flow.

“We need a viable transportation plan that anticipates and effectively paces growth, and we need to stick to it!”

“Before we fully build out County Line Road, Madison Boulevard, and other possible forthcoming main arteries, we should look at installing frontage roads to enhance throughput while providing safe access to local businesses.  We can add and extend turn lanes to ease choke points. We should look for design opportunities to connect roads, like Mill and Hardiman, rather than install adjacent traffic lights. Traffic circles have proven effective; we should look to expand them.”

Karen recognizes that meticulous growth planning is the lynchpin to nurturing a city that thrives, most particularly with our schools and youth activities.

“Our schools represent the very best of what our city has to offer. Even though for the most part school funding and funding for city services are separate and non-competing, the growth decisions that council makes directly impact the school district.”

“Adding new residential housing results in increased costs to the schools as it leads to new school construction, new buses and hiring new teachers.  Each new proposed development must be evaluated carefully for its potential impact on our City’s infrastructure. With great consideration, I only supported select new housing developments during my first term. If our schools struggle financially to keep up, our children struggle, and we’ve failed the very heartbeat of our city.”

While schools, youth, and families are the heartbeat and pulse of our city, businesses are the oxygen that feeds our economy and helps create a vibrant, positive place to live.

“City Council plays a critical role in supporting our local businesses in several ways. First, through thoughtful zoning and targeted incentives. Second, through quality infrastructure, such as maintaining roads and solving congestion issues. Third, through exceptional police and fire services which provide security and safety.”

“Collectively, these measures and others help support existing businesses while attracting desirable new businesses to specific areas of Madison. This is a huge win for our entire community!”

Karen has served as council liaison to numerous entities, including the School Board, the Police and Fire Departments, the Police Citizens Advisory Committee, the Beautification Board, the Senior Center, Madison Visionary Partners, and the Madison Street Festival. Serving these organizations keeps Karen engaged with the citizens helping her to better understand their needs and adequately address them.

Service and volunteering are Karen’s passions, and she finds that Kids to Love, Hospice care, Downtown Rescue Mission, and America Legion Auxiliary are all wonderful places to serve.
