Just days after holiday decor is packed away and the New Years’ Eve ball drops, many will begin buzzing about all things taxes.
H&R Block here in Madison recently shared with All Things Madison that many in our community will experience unpleasant tax return “surprises” due to the Child Tax Credit advance, which officially ends this month.
Terry Reed, senior tax analyst with the H&R Block location on HWY 72, says that there were many changes to tax laws in 2021 and that a lot of people have been misguided about how to handle these changes.
“Part of the refund that many families expect to receive on their tax return for having children has already been paid to them in advance, so the tax return that many people look forward to may be significantly less next year.”
Reed says that no two families have tax filings that look the exact same because taxes is ultimately a very personal situation. This is one of the biggest reasons Reed stresses the importance of filing with a professional at H&R Block in 2022.
Reed says that the Madison H&R Block locations open on January 4th, 2022 for tax season, and she suggests that this is absolutely the year “to go to an expert in the field who can get on your level of understanding and explain what all of these changes mean.”
Reed says that going to an H&R Block tax professional this year will provide a peace of mind in the products and services that they offer.
“So many people get letters from the IRS every year, and it’s a scary thing. Some people end up owing big money.” She continued to share that if a client has his or her tax return filed with H&R Block and then receives a letter from the IRS, he or she is invited to immediately bring it to their office for a free review to help make sure everything is right.
When asked why community members should make an appointment at H&R Block instead of using online software programs, Reed says that when it comes to taxes, you absolutely cannot replace the value of working with a tax professional versus a robot.
H&R Block versus tax software
“Online software programs are question-based, and if you misunderstand a question and answer it wrong, you’ll be taken down a road that completely messes up your taxes.”
She continued to share that tax professionals at H&R Block will share with you all kinds of benefits and exemptions that you may not even be aware exist.
“I actually worked with a couple recently that had adopted a few children, and they were completely unaware that they could claim an adoption credit on their taxes.”
She says that this credit ended up putting thousands of dollars back in their pockets, and they were thrilled.
Reed says that booking an appointment with an H&R Block tax professional can be done quickly and easily online by visiting HRBlock.com and selecting the office closest to you. Clients will then view a list of tax professionals’ pictures and profiles and then select the professional they’d like to work with.
“One thing we love about what we do is the education part. When we go through your tax return, we also educate you so that you understand what everything means and that you’re aware of your own finances.”
Reed says that empowering and educating clients is foundational for H&R Block.
H&R Block District Manager Todd Harmon says that one of the biggest, most positive changes H&R Block has made to their service offerings is a slew of virtual options that make tax filing as convenient and accurate as possible.
“We know that people are busy, which is why we offer an option for clients to upload all of their documents to our app,” he shared. ” From there, our professionals will do all of the work, send it back to you, and then video chat about it before finalizing it.”
He says that customers can pay for the services online as well, making the 2022 tax filing options as simple as they can be.
Harmon shared that helping small business owners has also become a big focus for H&R Block.
“A lot of small business owners don’t realize that they qualify for benefits and deductions just like large businesses do.”
He says that many of the H&R Block tax professionals in this area are specifically trained to help small business clients and look forward to connecting with owners who are looking to hold on to as much of their money as possible.
As you consider the approaching 2022 tax season, consider hiring the professionals at H&R Block here in Madison to ensure that all of your personal and/or business filings are done with accuracy. There is no price you can put on peace of mind.
