When Candice Kinabrew of Centreville, Mississippi discovered in March that Terrame’s Madison location specialized in hair extensions specially formulated for patients after chemotherapy, there was nothing that was going to stand in her way of getting her youngest daughter Taylor to Madison so that she could get these special extensions installed just in time for her junior prom.
Kinabrew shares that her daughter Taylor was diagnosed in November of 2021 with a very rare form of Ovarian cancer. Her diagnosis came just three weeks after her 16th birthday.
For the next six months, Taylor underwent six rounds of chemotherapy. Though she’d completed chemotherapy by June 2022, her hair had grown just three inches by April 2023.
Tired of her wigs and ready for something different, Taylor perked up when she discovered that special extensions were possible for those who had recently completed chemo. With her junior prom just weeks away, her mom Candice set out on a mission to find this service for her daughter as fast as she could.
She soon discovered though that finding a salon that was certified in this type of extension installation was like finding a needle in a haystack. She was repeatedly told that Taylor needed a bit more hair to make them work.
Candice eventually found a contact located in Minnesota named John who connected her with Charla Johnson, the owner of Terrame.
Charla confirmed that “Yes, we offer chemo hair extensions!” and less than two weeks later the entire Kinabrew family – mom, dad, big sister, and Taylor – were all on their way to Madison. They left after church on Easter Sunday in preparation for Taylor’s big eight-hour appointment first thing Monday morning.
Though an in-person color match is usually the first step, time was of the essence. Several people worked together to perform Taylor’s color match long-distance so that she could get these extensions installed in time for prom.
These special extensions are seamless and give an incredibly natural look. The extensions are bonded to the hair with a special tree sap that is formulated specifically for post-chemo patients.
It’s very personalized, and just three inches of hair is needed to make the application work.
Candice says that Taylor felt like a million bucks walking into school the next day and that she felt beautiful just a few days later at prom.
In mid-July 2023, Taylor and her family returned again to Madison to have her extensions removed and reinstalled since her hair has impressively grown several more inches since the first install in April.
One stylist who is trained and certified in chemo hair extensions shared that this is the most heartwarming service that she can do.
