Though Candy’s Candles owner Candice Hayes loves hand-pouring and selling her very own line of candles, she equally enjoys educating others about the difference between candles like hers (soy-based) versus traditional big-box candles, which are often paraffin-based.

“Paraffin candles have petroleum and plastic in them,” she begins to share. “They also have a load of other chemicals that are harmful to ingest.”

Hayes says that once she begins to paint a picture of what consumers are actually breathing in when they burn “regular” candles, they’re generally horrified.

“Candles aren’t all made the same. Mine are made from soy which comes from soybeans. They’re all-natural with nothing harmful.”

Hayes shared that paraffin wax often releases toxic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the air. These VOCs include acetone, benzene, toluene, and more, which are known as carcinogens. Often found in diesel fuel emissions, these carcinogens are known to cause skin issues, asthma attacks, allergies, and more.

While paraffin candles generally create more soot that can travel to one’s lungs, soy-based candles like the kind Hayes makes produce significantly less smoke comparatively. Soy-based candles contain zero carcinogens, and they burn cleaner too!

“When you burn one of my candles, you can be sure that you and your loved ones aren’t inhaling any of the bad stuff.”

She also continued to share that all of her products are hand-poured, which is in contrast to many big-box stores candles that are made in mass production. Her wicks are different from mass-produced candles as well.

“The wicks in my candles are cotton, which means they’ll burn 50% longer and lead to way less of that black soot that is terrible for you to ingest.”

Hayes says that lead wicks are often found in “regular” candles and that wicks like these burn off all kinds of unhealthy toxins commonly associated with lead.

Candy’s Candles are scented with clean fragrance oils which aren’t overpouring while also being detactable and refreshing.

Author note: I’ve completely burned through two candles, and they are absolutely wonderful!

All of her luxe vessel candles (as pictured below) are reusable and come with a lid. When our vessel candle was finished, we popped it in the dishwasher and it came out perfectly clean! We have the black one, and now my husband uses it to store some of his bathroom essentials in.

Her 16 oz. jar vessels are reusable too! This is just another way that Hayes focuses on being as resourceful and eco-friendly as possible.
